Visionary Support Knowledge Base Spyware How to remove Movieland

How to remove Movieland

Problem:

Movieland has gotten onto your computer. It takes over the whole screen and probably has a girl talking to you.

Movieland may have been installed on your computer following a visit by you (or someone at your computer) from a paid link for a "3 Day Free Trial". The software continues to pop up and request payment for services following the 3 day trial. This is a software package we refer to as malware, as it hinders and inhibits the user's ability to use their computer.

The real problem with Movieland is their Terms of Use, which you (or someone using your computer) may have agreed to by clicking "run" in the Internet Explorer Security Warning.

Solution:

Movieland installs a number of files that allow it to keep popping up requests for payment (which you may or may not have unwittingly agreed to when clicking "run" without reading the terms of service).

Here's how to get rid of it:

Click the Start menu, and Control Panel should be in there (or Settings, then Control Panel). Then open Add/Remove Programs. It should open with a big list of things. Look through the list for:

  • AltPayments,
  • Download Manager
  • Media Pipe
  • MyAccessMedia, or
  • P2Pnetworks.

Probably just P2PNetworks will be there, and so click on it so it's highlighted, and then click the Remove (or Change/Remove or Add/Remove) button. Tell it you do want to uninstall, and go through its process, then click close. Now it should be gone from the list. If any of the other ones do happen to be there, do the same process to remove them.

Now close Add/Remove Programs and we're going to Program Files. Open My Computer, then open "Local Disk (C:)", then open Program Files (click on show contents if contents are hidden in either folder). The items we want to delete in there are:

  • AltPayments or altpayV2
  • Download Manager
  • fsupport
  • ITBills (If you have this one, you probably will have to go into safe mode to remove. Or you can end the itbill process if you know how to do that and then delete the folder.)
  • MediaPipe
  • MyAccessMedia
  • Anything with Notifier or Notification in the name.
  • You also have something called MovieLand Terms or MovieLand Hotmail Something (I don't remember exactly, sorry), possibly at the end of the list rather than under "M" where you'd expect. Delete that also. Anything with Movieland in the title, delete.
  • You probably don't have p2pnetworks in Program Files (since we just removed it in Add/Remove Programs), but if you do delete it too.
Now once all that is gone, go back into Add/Remove Programs and see if you have Notification Utility. If you do have it in the list, remove it (thanks to the commenters below for this tip). If trying to remove this takes you to the movieland website, make sure you removed all the things from Program Files.

If It Didn't Work:

You may get a message that says it cannot delete the file due to it is being used by another person or program and to close all programs. If you get this message, you've got to do more work. Do the following:

1) Download Pocket KillBox from: http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip . You probably won't need it, but just in case, we might as well download it now, before we go into Safe Mode.

2) Restart your computer into safe mode now. To go into safe mode, go into the Start menu, choose Restart just as you normally would (click Shut Down or Turn Off Computer and then select Restart if you are not sure how to restart and can't find Restart in the menu), then start hitting the F8 key at the top of the keyboard. Just keep hitting F8 over and over every second or so until it brings you to a black screen giving you some choices. Using your arrow keys on the keyboard, choose Safe Mode, then hit Enter twice. Then wait a while and it will eventually bring you into Windows Safe Mode. (If it just restarted normally instead of going into safe mode, click here and follow the instructions for a different method of getting to safe mode)

3) Try deleting the folders in safe mode. Quite possibly you will be able to successfully delete them now. If not, continue with the steps below to have Pocket KillBox force them to delete.

4) Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it.

5) Now put a tick by Standard File Kill.

6) In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste C:/Program Files/altpayv2 , C:/Program Files/MediaPipe , C:/Program Files/p2pnetworks , and any of the other folders you couldn't delete one at a time. Then click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file. It will ask for confimation to delete the file. Click Yes. Continue with that same procedure until you have copied and pasted all of these in the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box.

Note: It is possible that Killbox will tell you that one or more files do not exist. If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you don't miss any.

So, to recap, paste these folders in and make sure Deltree is checked before hitting the red x:

C:/Program Files/altpayv2 (and/or AltPayments)
C:/Program Files/MediaPipe
C:/Program Files/p2pnetworks
C:/Program Files/[any folder or file with Movieland in the title]
Also delete ITBills and fsupport and Download Manager if they are present (Thanks to the commenters below for letting us know about these variants!). Also anything with Notification or Notifier in the name is highly suspect and should probably be deleted. Also, one person has reported the presence of a MyAccessMedia folder in the C Drive. So, you should also delete
C:/MyAccessMedia
if it is present.

Hopefully that does it!

Deleting these files has successfully cleaned Movieland. So, the hijacking and pop-ups should stop now. But, it's possible there's more than one version of Movieland, so if this doesn't work, you could get serious and do some of the more thorough and time-comsuming steps here:

http://forums.techguy.org/security/421861-movieland-media-pipe-spyware-removal.html

or here:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic36432.html

**Update: Movieland's installation does seem to keep morphing slightly, possibly to prevent people from removing it using these instructions. I will make some attempt to keep these instructions up to date. If you encounter a variant that requires additional steps to remove, just leave a comment below the article.**

Also, if you had Movieland, chances are good you have other malware or spyware as well. So to prevent things like this from happening again, and get rid of anything else you might have, you really should also do the steps in the Preventing Spyware Problems article here: http://home.vcn.com/knowledgebase/article.php?id=346 .

Disclaimer: Visionary is not affiliated with Movieland. Visionary did not put Movieland on your computer. We are just telling you how to remove it. Movieland is a totally different company, that has threatened to sue us, in fact. There is no need call us and complain that we put Movieland on your computer.

My work computer had the movieland pop up on that asked for payment for it to be removed. I tried everthing to get it off and that dang pop up still came back. I went to google to see if there were programs to get rid of it, of course the first few places I visited wanted money to have them remove it, your site were easy to follow and got rid of the problem fast and easy, best of all it was free. Thank you very much.

Thanks for all the help, especially with removing itbill when it tells you it can't be deleted because another programme is using it. Another folder in programme files to look out for is fsupport It has files such as "kate," the dumb blonde girl whose stupid face flashes up on the screen randomly to tell you all about movielands' "services". Delete this file too.

Thank you!!!
I had already done most of what you guys did to remove the

movieland pile from my computer, except for the final step. The add remove programs would not let me delete the Notification Utility. it kept redirecting me to the movieland site. Obviously some portions of this pile had found a hiding place in the Programs folder. After deleting it, dumping the recycler bin, returning to Add/Remove it finally gave up and went away (flush, swirl and bye bye). Thanks for all your comments and suggestions. The only reason I did not add an email address is that I'm so paranoid now that I wouldn't put it past these heeps to do thier normal stinking best to send out yet another turd. And dump you bin again right away!!! Happy New Year!

How to remove cookies
Replying to Stephanie above:

From the Tools menu (for the old version 4, the View menu), select Internet Options. Then in the "Temporary Internet Files" section, click the Delete Cookies button. That's it!

While you're in here cleaning things out, you may want to also click the Delete Files button. Put a checkmark by "Delete all offline content", then click OK. You may get the hourglass and have to wait as long as several minutes.

BUT using mapquest and the address, I found a company at the same location called Oomph Enterprises....with a rather evasive answering service. If you feel like tormenting them back, give them a call...or two...or three. (When a party receives a call on a toll-free number, they pay a charge, usually from $.30 to $1.00. A few hundred thousand calls later...)

I am under 21 so I can't download, install or use the application or the services. i would like to say a massive thankyou for helping me get rid of the blasted movieland. i have tried everthing and this was my last hope! i have read the comments below from the movie land people, and i can assure them and you i DID not enter into any agreement with them at all. i would also like to add that you apparantly get this 'thing' on a 3 day free trial period after which you are 'legally' tied in. it is very convenient that only on the FOURTH day the pop ups start invading you - so you don't know ANYTHING about it until it is too late!!

would like to say i wish i had come to your site first..all the people who have logged comments on here are not liars and we did not subscribe to this rubbish..someone should take out a law suit against them! Thanks again. Lorraine xx

thank you so much!
I actually love you! I was getting so frustrated about these popups, every time I heard that music start again I just felt like crying! No-one in my family seemed to know who had agreed to these 'terms' that seem to be non-existent unless you visit the movieland website, like I did, trying to find out what the hell it was! I didn't feel this violated even when my home was broken into, at least then you know you can call the police on the criminal.

Incidently although 'kate' informed me of my legal obligation to pay up....in the terms on the website, was it just me or was there no mention of any 'obligation to pay' or how much if you didn't want to continue using whatever it is? This is a quote from the site:

BY PARTICIPATING IN THE MOVIELAND / MEDIAPIPE FREE TRIAL OFFER THE MEDIAPIPE SOFTWARE WILL ENABLE YOU TO ACCESS THE AVAILABLE CONTENT FOR THE PERIOD OF TIME THAT SPECIFIED ON THE ADVERTISMENT YOU HAVE CLICKED THROUGH.

but if you can't access any further content, then you haven't used the mediapiipe services beyond the 'free' trial period. if it is as they say a 'free 3day trial, then you don't have to pay for the 3days this rubbish was on your system without you knowing it! the rest of the 'what it does section reads:

IF YOU DO NOT PROVIDE PAYMENT INFORMATION DURING THE TRIAL PERIOD OUR BILLING SOFTWARE WILL BE ENABLED UPON THE EXPIRATION OF YOUR TRIAL PERIOD. THE BILLING SOFTWARE WILL RUN ON YOUR COMPUTER, DISPLAYING POP-UP WINDOW REMINDERS THAT PROVIDE YOU WITH VARIOUS METHODS OF PAYMENT FOR THE ANNUAL LICENSE. THESE POP-UP WINDOWS WILL APPEAR MORE FREQUENTLY UNTIL YOU CHOOSE ONE OF THE PAYMENT OPTIONS AND PAY FOR THE LICENSE. THE BILLING SOFTWARE IS SOLELY DESIGNED TO PREVENT FRAUDULENT AND UNAUTHORIZED USE OF THE MEDIAPIPE SOFTWARE.

If it's sole purpose is to prevent fraud, you don't have to pay because you are not intending to use their software either fraudulently or legitimately, surely! It really is like holding your computer to ransom, but thanks to your wonderful site, (which I found, like others by google-ing 'Movieland con/scam') I managed to get rid of that horrible, cruel crap. Anyhoo, I've ranted long enough! So I'll finish again by saying 'thank you sooo much and if I wasn't a student I would completely bung u a tenner! And also say that creeps like the scumsucking pussbuckets at movieland (and that's not libel!) should be drowned in a bathtub of their own excrement and I hope they all die a horrible painful death. cheers!xxxxxx

scum @ movieland
tried all the fixes you listed and so far not back ! thank you ! as to the phone number of 1.866.231.5359 this is a toll free number for the company who does "customer service" for digital enterprises who i believe is the parent co of "movieland". i personally have called this number 5 times today to chat with whomever answers about anything they will chat about. since this is a toll free the cost is on them, i would encourage ALL THE POOR SUCKERS THAT HAVE THEIR CRAP ON THEIR COMPUTERS, LIKE MYSELF, to give them several calls a day, to discuss the weather, preferences in after shaves, perfumes, or any other inane subject. perhaps the flood of calls and expense will not break them, but will go a long way to making you feel better after the "crap" from them is removed from your computer. i know i feel better since i wasted thier time today !

I hate Movieland!
I was getting so frustrated trying to remove this stupid Movieland pop up. As if having to look at that ugly blonde Ho-bag Kate wasn't bad enough. Not being able to contact these crooks made it even worse. We tried everything to remove it and even almost considered paying them in order to get this crap off my computer. Movieland has got some nerve to legally threaten you after accidentally signing up for a "free trial." I don't know who or how this crap got on my computer. I just want to thank you so much for providing this article. It was a great help and I appreciate that your site provides effective and easy information to rid our computers of this movieland garbage. Thanks again!

Well moveiland.com may be you are doing good job. But its a burden after 3 days if we could not find this kind of article. In anyway ... we need to pay or format if we don't get help like this. there should be an option to uninstall via movieland.com if its a trial for 3 days. WHY DO YOU MAKE US PAY ANYWAY? All the options you have takes us to tha last option which is to PAY you. This is simply not fair.

You're the BEST!!
I made the mistake of not reading the agreement and installed Media pipe several months ago. I got the Movieland popups with days! When I checked it out, it said my trial peroid had expired and now I had to pay if I wanted to stop the popups. So I did. Well they statred up just a couple of hours ago and I KNOW I have not had anything to do with Movieland or Media Pipe on it. Your article helped me step by step to remove a program that got access to my computer. I have ZoneAlarm Pro on my computer and I made the mistake of giving P2PNetworks permission (thinkig it was PS2) this morning and that is when my problem started. I've also had problems with my computer running slow and Hanging when I've tried to close or go to another program. After removing all the files connected to Movieland, my computer seems to be running back at normal speed. Thank YOU SO much for making this information available.

Removing Movieland forever - hopefully
It all worked - especially after doing what JackDragon (December 26, 2005 at 9:57am) suggested about other programmes running. Brilliant advice all in all - and didn't have to go into safe mode at all.

Has movieland.com legal dept. actually done anything yet vis-a-vis an "emergency temporary restraining order"....? What c**p. How on earth can they claim any justification whatsoever for what they're doing. Hope they get far more adverse publicity..!!

Note from John:

No, we altered the article slightly, and as far as I know they haven't contacted us since. They may have emailed the company president further, but they have stopped emailing me anyway.

You wanted nothing in return but the simple pleasure of helping people in distress. We applaud you sir. As for the dispicable people who created this situation for so many people---- SHAME you leeches that suck the spirit and trust from good people, through treachery and deceipt, then defend yourself with a legal technicality knowing that your "RUN" boxes look exactly like the ones you can trust. Thanks so much for your instruction--so far, so good. Movieland.com's threats are pretty funny! I expect to hear on the news any day of their scam. Any half-way intelligent person can figure out that Movieland.com has invaded people's computer at knifepoint with their unreasonable demands (and easy-out of $20). They prey on underage teens and their impatient parents who just want the invasive and irritating message to "go away". AND you can't get to anyone through their website, not even their so-called customer service link (which doesn't work, any which way you try). Hmmm.....I wonder why? I'm glad I found your site!

Hi folks! I just got that same annoying message from Kate again a second ago. I need to get rid of her. I haven't tried any of the steps here yet, though, given their apparent success, I'm sure they will work just fine. I was just wondering if any of you who have removed MovieLand without ever paying them a cent have ever been threatened (after saying goodbye to Kate, that is) with some sort of action to collect or possibly sue. This seems like such an unbelievable scam, and yet, apparently, they do have some legal backing. Has anyone had to suffer at the hands of MovieLand after deleting it, or is it really goodbye and good riddance?

Thanks!

I GOT SUED!
I deleted the software like you said. Movieland sued me! I think they secured my address from my internet provider and they filed a claim against me in small claims court. The judge ordere me to pay the annual license fee plus their court costs (in California). Over $200! I didn't pay it but somehow they were able to get the money from my paycheck (garnishing my wages). The day I was in court there were about 10 other people there and they all lost too. The attorney said that there are law firms all over the country preparing to file similar suits. Nobody from Movieland even had to show up! I am so pissed! You should tell your other customers that this could happen to them. They should know before they just follow your directions and think they are done.

Movieland/Moviepass invasion
My pc was invaded by Moviepass.tv back in February.

Naturally my children were suspect of ordering something that they shouldn't have. Additionally, this annoying popup with the message from a blonde who insisted the only way to get rid of "Unlimited entertainment" through moviepass - was to pay for it.

No way .....

I almost fell for it just to get rid of it and assumed the kids ordered it. However, the time stamp of alleged software installation was at a time of day No One was home. I did a little more research to find out that I was not the only one who has been infected with unlawful marketing !!!!

I followed your step by step directions, however, not all of the files were downloaded to my system. None the less, I deleted what I had & so far I have not had a repeat perfomance.

To you, a world of thanks ... to my kids, sorry !!!!

Removing Kate from MovieLand
Anytime you want, you can view miss Kate. The fsupport folder under Program Files is where she lives. Just an FYI. Thanks John for all the help. PS for MovieLand "Legal." - Try requiring an email address or credit card number when giving people a 3-day pass. Hiding software and making account cancellation difficult just so happens to upset people - go figure.

Notify.exe
Update: The software seems to have morphed again. I just cleaned it off a client PC where it was called "notify.exe".

I hope they lose their lawsuit. Just like everyone else on this forum, I can't say enough about how bad movieland.tv is.

You're the greatest
Just wanted to thank you for helping me out with getting that horrid movieland off my bosses computer. He doesn't even know how he got it but it was a thorn in his (and mine) side. How dare they trick people. They strong arm you and he was just about ready to give them money to make them go away. Glad I stumbled on your cure for this. It worked perfectly. I saved the day for him again with your help. Thank you so much!

Moviepass.tv
I followed the procedures in your post (by the way, thanks!) to get rid of Moviepass.tv. Not all of the files were the same, but the methods seem to work nonetheless. I found an extra folder named Notify with a single .exe in it also named Notify that would not let me delete it. I followed your Safe Mode technique and was successful in getting rid of it. I suspect this is a morph of Moviepass.tv you may want to pass along. Again, thanks for your help, its always encouraging to find good people out there!

Movieland license manager
There is a program in the program files called movieland license manager, and it keeps redirecting me to the website. How should I get rid of this program?

Note from John:

I'd start up in Safe Mode and then delete that Movieland license manager.

Good Bye, Kate!
Thank you.! I just followed your steps to remove this annoying pop up. It was very easy to follow. Thanks to all of the commentors who alerted us of the sneaky other programs that need to be removed.

I hope I never see Kate and her bleached blond hair and split ends again!

Movieland.co.uk
I work for Movieland, a cinema based in N Ireland... we have nothing to do with Movieland.COM, our site is CO.UK

We still receive alot of emails about the Movieland site, please stop confusing us and direct your complaints to the appropriate party.

Thank you
