How to Stop Messenger Service Pop-ups Symptom: You are having lots of pop-ups constantly coming up with "Messenger Service" in the title bar. They may tell you your computer is infected with things or needs updates, and then tell you to go to a certain web site, such as wudate.net, or fixmyreg.com. They only pop up when you are connected to the internet. For example:
| Buffer Overflow in Messenger Service Causes Unexpected Computer
Shutdown, Virus Infection and Remote Code Execution. Your system IS
affected, download the patch from the address below! WWW.WUPDATE.NET |
Solution: All you have to do is disable the Messenger Service component of Windows. Don't confuse this with Windows Messenger the instant messaging program; Messenger Service is a totally different thing. To disable Messenger service:
- Go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services
- Scroll down and double-click "Messenger"
- Click the STOP button.
- Select Disable in the Startup Type menu.
- Click OK.
That should end your pop-ups, at least the ones coming from Messenger Service. You may have other spyware causing other pop-ups, in which case you should follow the instructions in the article
here.
