Problem Email recipients not getting your attachments, or only get a winmail.dat file instead of what you are trying to send. This occurs when sending email in rich text format (RTF) to someone who s email program is not setup to read rich text.
Solution depending upon the version of Email program you are using, there are several ways that this can be resolved. Instructions for the two most popular programs, Outlook Express (OE) and Microsoft Outlook are listed below.
Outlook Express (OE) If you are having multiple recipients who are not getting your attachments, just a winmail.dat file, unless it is absolutely something you use in your emailing, you will probably want to disable rich text.
Disabling Rich Text (for all messages)
To disable Rich Text formatting (also known as html format on Outlook Express) you will need to follow the steps, within Outlook Express:
- Click Tools
- Click Options
- Click Send
- Under the Send Tab select Plain Text for Mail Sending Format (note: you can also select it for News Sending Format if you use the news servers)
- Click Apply
- Click OK, which will save the configuration
You can disable RTF format for an individual message by following these steps:
Disabling Rich Text (per message)
- Click Create Mail (or Reply to a message you have)
- Before filling out the message body click on Format
- Click Plain Text in the list
- Go back to your message and continue writing
Microsoft Outlook Microsoft Outlook also allows you to disable rich text for all messages or just one at a time.
Disabling Rich Text (for all messages)
To disable Rich Text formatting on Microsoft Outlook follow the steps:
- Click Tools
- Click Options
- Click Mail Format
- Change the Compose this message format: to Plain Text
- Click Apply
- Click OK to save the configuration
Disabling Rich Text (per message):
- Click Reply to a message you have or New to write a new message
- Before typeing in the message body, From the messaage toolbar, click the current Format and select Plain Text. (You will see a message Warning: Changing this message from Microsoft Office Outlook Rich Text to plain text Click Yes)
- Go back and continue to write your message.
